What We’re Thankful For

Local resident Lucinda the Turkey, hours away from her execution, enjoys one final stroll in Luther Burbank Park.

At The Mercer Island Distorter, we have much to be thankful for as 2015 near its close. What started as a dream, next a notion, and then a vision, finally became the pages that you hold in front of you right now. We feel truly privileged to be able to serve our island community in a way that no other news organization is willing or able.

In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, we present the following list of things that — on behalf of the entire Mercer Island community — we are thankful for:

  1. We don’t live in Seattle
  2. We don’t live in Bellevue
  3. Our very own toll-free I-90 express lanes, in perpetuity
  4. Working electricity… most of the time
  5. Working Internet… some of the time
  6. Tap water that we can drink without boiling
  7. The Mercer Island School District: Private school education at public school prices
  8. Campaign signs are gone [Though admit it: You miss the tricycles]
  9. No admitted socialists on our city council
  10. Roberto’s Pizza is still closed
  11. “Homegrown” is easier to pronounce than “Stopsky’s”
  12. Amazon.com’s secret acquisition of Island Books
  13. Plenty of parking at the Mercer Island Park & Ride… if you get there after 3 PM
  14. Large construction projects allow us to have that Downtown Seattle vibe without crossing the bridge
  15. Closure of Albertsons simplifies local grocery shopping options to QFC or QFC
  16. Learning that a “Town Center moratorium” is not a large receptacle on 77th Ave SE for the disposal of dead bodies
  17. The Mercer Island Police Department’s unwavering dedication to enforcing local speed limits
  18. Lack of a local arts facility on Mercer Island means our neighbors don’t expect us to watch their kids’ performances
  19. Real estate developers are deforesting Mercer Island at a rate slightly slower than the Amazon rain forest
  20. Legalized marijuana means that kids home from college can earn spending money by selling to their younger siblings at the high school
  21. The dream that one day we’ll be a short helicopter ride away from an NBA arena
  22. We listened to our friends when they told us not to get a NextDoor account
  23. Yoga pants

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!
