Island Grandmother Excited For Boys Water Polo Fundraiser

Mercer Island Boys Water Polo's newest fan is at a loss for words when asked to explain her interest in the team.

A long-time Mercer Island resident announced yesterday that she is “very much looking forward to” the upcoming Boys Water Polo Team car wash fundraiser, being held this Sunday at the South End shopping center.

In an interview at the Mercer Island Country Club, First Hill resident and retired cafeteria worker Bea Learing explained her enthusiasm: “I’d never even heard of water polo until today. I stopped by here to pick up my granddaughter from a birthday party and noticed the boys practicing. I’ve been watching them for the last half hour and literally cannot take my eyes off of them,” later adding, “This is a team I could totally get behind.”

“I wish I could put my finger on it,” Learing responded when asked to elaborate on her sudden interest in the sport. Then she looked back toward the pool and after a long pause said, “I’m sorry, what was the question again?”

Update: The Distorter learned later in the day from Learing’s husband that she will be unable to attend Sunday’s fundraiser due to a conflict with an emergency bible study session. A spokesperson for the team commented that the boys expect to receive their usual strong support from other members of the Mercer Island community as well as the King County Cougar Rescue League.
